Two Tips for Those Who Need to Hire a Skip Bin

If you need to hire a skip bin from a local rubbish removal business, here are some tips that you should keep in mind.

Distribute the refuse evenly across the storage area within the bin

Most rubbish removal companies who rent out skip bins will advise their clients to evenly distribute the rubbish across the entire storage area of their bin, rather than allowing it to pile up on one side of this container. It is particularly important to heed this advice if you need to dispose of heavy items in the bin.

If you put too many heavy items on one side of the bin and just a few lightweight pieces of rubbish on the opposite side, the bin's balance may be affected. This could lead to two problems. Firstly, if the bin is positioned on a gradient and too many heavy items are placed in the part of the bin that is closest to the base of the gradient, there is a chance that the bin could tip over. This could be highly dangerous for anyone who happens to be near the bin when this happens (as they could be struck by the bin itself or the refuse falling out of it).

Secondly, if the bin tips over and hits the ground with a lot of force, it is possible that cracks, dents or holes could form in it. If this happens, you may not only have to order a new skip bin from the rubbish removal company, but your final bill from them may also be higher, due to the costs they will incur as a result of having to repair the damaged bin.

Rinse off any items containing food or drink debris before putting them into the bin

If you will be putting items that were once used to store or transport perishable goods (i.e. food and drink) then it is important to rinse any residual debris off the items before putting them into the skip. The perishable debris could rot, and this rancid food and drink residue could encourage rats, cockroaches or mice to climb into the bin.

If this happens, the employee from the rubbish removals company who comes to collect the bin may not take it away until this issue is dealt with (if they load a pest-filled bin onto their lorry, these pests could then infest their vehicle).

This could then lead to you having to put traps or poison in the bin and then waiting for the infestation to be resolved before you could have the bin collected. This postponement of the collection of the bin may be problematic if this item is taking up space on your property that you need for parking vehicles.

As such, it is worth taking a little bit of time to rinse off any items covered in food or drink debris before throwing them into the skip.
